Location: 401A Northshore Drive
Property Type: 4-room unit
When creating a home that resonates with personal style and functionality, Yuan Interior Design never fails to deliver. Today, we are thrilled to showcase the stunning transformation of a 4-room unit at 401A Northshore Drive, completed for Mr. Alan and his family. This project perfectly encapsulates our client-focused philosophy and creative problem-solving skills.
Client Background and Vision
Mr. Alan, a former interior design professional, came to us through a recommendation from his relative. Having left the industry due to dissatisfaction with how some designers failed to meet client expectations, Mr Alan sought a team that understood his needs and could bring his vision to life. During our initial consultation, Mr Alan wanted a rock-and-stone feature wall, a cosy and warm aesthetic using brown and cream tones, and an open-concept kitchen with a breakfast island. Additionally, his wife’s wish for a clean and functional design with hidden storage and efficiently maintainable spaces added another layer of complexity to the project.
Project Timeline
The renovation project commenced on 26 December 2023 and was completed by 20 March 2024, spanning three intensive months. Throughout this period, both the client and the team navigated tight timelines and worked diligently during the Lunar New Year break to ensure the project was delivered flawlessly within the agreed timeframe.
Key Design Decisions
Rock-and-Stone Feature Wall:
The rock-and-stone feature wall is a standout element in the living room. It adds texture and depth to the space and aligns with Mr. Alan’s vision for a unique focal point.
Colour Palette:
Warm browns and creams dominate the design, creating a cosy and inviting atmosphere that complements the natural elements of the feature wall.
Open-Concept Kitchen:
The kitchen was transformed into an open space with a sleek breakfast island, perfect for casual dining and morning routines. Hacking-down walls maximised natural light, creating a seamless flow between the kitchen and dining areas.
Flooring Overhaul:
The original vinyl flooring was replaced with marble-inspired tiles measuring 300mm by 600mm. This upgrade enhanced the aesthetic appeal and aligned with Mr. Alan’s preference for a tiled look with the durability of vinyl.
Custom Storage Solutions:
To address the couple’s need for hidden storage, we integrated concealed switches, smart lighting systems that can be controlled via smartphone, and epoxy-grounded bathrooms for easy cleaning.
Lighting:
Balancing Mr. Alan’s preference for warm lighting and his wife’s preference for white light, we installed adjustable lighting systems throughout the home. Bright yet cosy lighting in the living, dining, and bedrooms created a versatile ambience.
Challenges and Solutions
One of the most challenging aspects of this project was hacking the partition wall between the kitchen and one bedroom. Upon discovering concrete at the base of the partition, we promptly consulted HDB officials to ensure compliance with regulations. Taking a meticulous approach, we secured the necessary approvals and completed the wall removal without delay.
Functional Aesthetics
Our design seamlessly blended functionality and aesthetics. By prioritising practical elements such as hidden storage, smart switches, and durable materials, we ensured the home met the couple’s lifestyle needs while maintaining a clean and stylish appearance.
Highlights of the Transformation
Living and Dining Areas: The rock-and-stone feature wall and cohesive lighting set the tone for a warm and welcoming space.
Kitchen: The open-concept design with a breakfast island became a focal point for the family’s daily routines.
Bathrooms: Epoxy-grounded floors simplified cleaning, addressing the couple’s concern about maintenance.
Custom Storage: Concealed switches and integrated storage solutions ensured a clutter-free environment.

Before and After
The transformation of the 4-room unit was nothing short of remarkable. From a standard HDB layout to a personalised sanctuary, the home reflects its residents' unique tastes and needs.
